The speaker will discuss the meaning of visual literacy and the importance of still and moving image materials for archivists, curators and librarians whose collections document the contemporary cultural landscape and who provide researchers with access to original source material.

1. Collections Management

Moderator: David Maslyn, Director, University Library, University of Rhode Island
This session will address a range of collections management issues relating to moving image materials, including collection policies, successful management of "mixed media" collections, and satisfying the needs of possibly divergent user groups. Speakers will discuss policies and procedures at their institutions.
2. Legal Issues
Speakers: Sue Kantrowitz, Attorney, WGBH; Scott Landsman, Attorney and Multimedia Specialist, Harvard Law School; Wilma Slaight, Curator, Wellesley College Archives
Moderator: Leith Johnson, Associate Curator, Wesleyan Cinema Archives
What are the legal issues that face curators when they collect moving image materials and provide access to them? How can curators and producers improve their interactions regarding access, copyright. and clearances for films and videotapes? Speakers will discuss these issues from the perspectives of a legal counsel, a multimedia producer, and a curator.

3. Moving Image Materials Roundtable
Discussion Leaders: Ernest Dick, President, Association of Moving Image Archivists; Philip Eppard, President, New England Archivists; Gregory Lukow, Director for Administration, National Center for Film and Video Preservation; Megan Sniffin-Marinoff, President, New England Archivists, 1992/1993
Discussion will focus on the concerns of archivists, curators, and librarians at the national and local levels, including the role of AMIA and the role of NEA. The following questions will be addressed: What are the possible regional initiatives, and how do they relate to national initiatives for the preservation of and access to moving image resources?
4. Descriptive Access
Speakers: Patricia Burdick, Project Manager, Collections Guide, Northeast Historic Film; Judith Hoffman, American Archives of Factual Film, Iowa State University; Alex Griswold, Science Media Group, Harvard -Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics; Kara Schneiderman, Museum Archivist, The MIT Museum
Moderator: Ruth Tomasian, Executive Director, Project SAVE, Watertown, Massachusetts
This session will address the following questions: How does one provide descriptive control and access for moving image materials? What are the possibilities for creating Focal, in-house systems? What are the roles of institutional and national bibliographic databases for providing access to moving image materials? Speakers will present four different approaches to providing descriptive access to motion picture films and videotapes.
