Archives on the Road
Since 2001, the Outreach Committee has been working on a program dubbed Archives on the Road, a take on the popular PBS series Antiques Roadshow. Archives on the Road events take place across the New England region at a wide variety of archival repositories, generally at the request of local archivists, historians, and repository administrators. Click here to view previous Archives on the Road events.
Archives on the Road is an opportunity for people to talk to archivists about their family papers, scrapbooks, diaries, letters, photographs, and other archival materials of personal value, with the goal of better understanding historical value and the preservation options available to people for their objects. Archivists explain basic preservation/ conservation techniques, how collections are donated, what happens to collections at archival repositories, and make available lists of resources for those interested in finding free-lance archivists, researchers, and consultants. No specific repositories or institutions are recommended as recipients of donations, but lists of repositories in the region will be available. Our goal is to help people better understand how to care for their treasures and how archives and archivists can help them achieve these goals.
The major difference between Antiques Roadshow and Archives on the Road is that archivists do not provide monetary values for any objects brought (however, archivist will provide individuals with information about archival appraisers in the New England area).
The Outreach Committee welcomes both public and private repositories, interested organizations, and clubs to schedule an event in concurrence with town history days and holidays.
Currently scheduled events:
June 21-22, 2008: Vermont History Expo, Tunbridge, VT
