Providence College, a member of the HELIN Consortium, seeks an energetic, flexible & innovative leader to collaborate in the College's teaching, learning & research enterprise by guiding its research & research education (R&E) initiatives. The librarian reports to the Library Director & is a tenure-track member of the ordinary faculty. As a tenure-track faculty, the R&E Librarian must develop, pursue & apply a scholarly research agenda & an approach to library faculty activities which would meet tenure requirements.

The Research & Education unit involves all professional library staff, as well as numerous Library Commons & Student Commons Assistants. This position has primary responsibility for R&E services & resources: 1) leadership in the library's R&E initiatives in the library & on the Web, 2) leadership in PC's development R&E research materials & research education curriculum of all types & in all formats. The R&E area also collaborates closely with teaching & research faculty & with other areas of the Library Commons: Technology & Access, Digital Services, Special Collections & Collection Services.

It has newly-renovated patron spaces & has implemented the full range of patron-focused tools, services & resources, including digital repositories. The Head of R&E will serve as a key leader in the evolving Library Commons.

Duties:

Responsibilities: Must demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement & service for tenure & promotion providing intellectual vision & expertise to the College & the library in:

  • collaborating with the Director, Library & College staff & faculty to plan, implement & manage the library's R&E assets & projects as a model library of the future;
  • managing the library's staff & programs in support teaching, learning & research;
  • leading development of the library as an interactive teaching, learning & research laboratory for external & internal patrons, emphasizing service desks & Web-based services, just-in-time tutorials & intuitive, patron-focused approaches;
  • leading high-technology research & development regarding tools & resources for articulated research & research education, including ongoing training & education of staff across the library;
  • leading implementation of technology tools (e.g., LibGuides, LibAnswers, LibStats, Captiva, Camtasia) in research & research education initiatives at PC, in HELIN & beyond;
  • ensuring appropriate Web presence for R&E as an integral part of the library's Web presence;
  • anticipating future trends in an evolving R&E environment, maintaining current awareness of national & international developments affecting research, research education, knowledge management, metadata, & information retrieval, & participating actively in professional networks & conferences to monitor & participate in shaping changes in high-education research and research education standards & practices;
  • contributing to the library's quantitative & qualitative assessment of services through data-gathering & -analysis & -presentation
  • leading the library's liaison program, including research-desk & research education activities, outreach & collection development
  • serving on professional committees as appropriate within the College, the HELIN Consortium & in the broader professional community;
  • collecting pertinent data & creating targeted statistical reports;
  • participating in problem-solving & policy-making activities; &
  • performing other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent library degree or experience; additional graduate degree/s in content area/s strongly preferred
  • demonstrated professional research & research education expertise & experience, including working knowledge of the range of R&E models, emerging trends, technologies, best-practices & changing roles emerging trends;
  • demonstrated high technology savvy & expertise in appropriate technologies, preferably Windows, Macintosh & other environments;
  • demonstrated ability & experience in theory of teaching & learning & pedagogy, especially as related to research education;
  • ability & willingness to write proposals & (grant, project, etc.);
  • project design & management experience;
  • demonstrated scholarly & research interests & ability to meet tenure requirements;
  • demonstrated high technology savvy & expertise in appropriate technologies, preferably Windows, Macintosh & other environments;
  • ability to work independently & successfully in a collegial & dynamic environment, learn & teach new technologies quickly, think on ones feet with energy & flexibility;
  • ability to develop strategies for integrating new technologies & services into the existing framework;
  • knowledge of the issues & trends in librarianship, including digital resource & copyright compliance issues;
  • inclusive & collegial management style;
  • excellent writing & communication skills;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • additional graduate degree/s in content area/s strongly preferred
  • experience in an integrated (Commons) & in a liberal arts academic environment;
  • experience with III / Innovative Interfaces ILS & its Millennium platform, link resolvers & electronic resource management tools including knowledge of metadata/taxonomy schemes;
  • experience with faceted "discovery" search tools (ENCORE), open URL-resolvers (Serials Solutions), federated search software (EBSCO Integrated Search), electronic resource management software (ERM), bibliographic utilities (e.g., EndNote, ProCite, etc.) & related tools;
  • experience associated with the creation & maintenance of data related to digital materials;
  • experience with textual & multi-media digital institutional repositories (Digital Commons, ContentPro);
  • working knowledge of languages(s) beyond English (Romance languages & Latin);
  • experience in a consortium;
  • collection management experience;
  • strong, enthusiastic commitment to integrated & innovative patron-focused service; &
  • resilience of character & perspective, with a sense of humor
