Job Description:
Working in a team environment with the staff of the UNE Library Services and the Healy Chair, the Maine Women Writers Collection (MWWC) Curator assumes major responsibility for the organization, maintenance, promotion and use of UNE's Maine Women Writers Collection. S/he is involved in grant writing and other forms of fund raising and development; makes budget recommendations and monitors endowment expenditures; develops academic relationships; facilitates curricular integration of the MWWC; provides reference service and user education; plans and implements public programs, exhibits, and outreach projects; promotes the MWWC through publications in both printed and electronic formats; and is engaged in the solicitation, acquisition, processing, cataloging, arrangement, description, conservation and preservation of all MWWC materials. Travel is required.
Responsibilities:
OVERALL
- Serves as curator of the Maine Women Writers Collection.
- Writes policy documents.- Compiles manual of policies and procedures.
- Describes program elements, goals, functions.
- Budget; Endowment expenditures.
- Monitors facility systems including climate control and security.
- Responsible for maintaining effectively secure environment through policies & procedures.
- Grant writing.
- Long-range plan.
- Monitors and updates Collection Development Plan.
ACQUISITION
- Macro-surveying for identification of vendors, booksellers, potential donors, primary source materials.- Contracts & negotiations.
- Micro-surveying.
- Disposal scheduling.
- Appraisal.
ARRANGEMENT & DESCRIPTION
- Close examination of collections to set priorities.
- Recommend sorting, culling.- Arrangement on paper and actual.
- Electronic cataloging & description.
- Preparation of finding aids, especially electronic.
CONSERVATION
- Preventative: removing clips, refoldering, reboxing.
- Managing storage areas.
- Preservation services, conservation, restoration, preservation copying.
- Materials testing.
- Monitoring environmental conditions.
REFERENCE & USER EDUCATION
- On-site:Admission of users.
- Reference interview.Information.
- Advice on holdings and use of finding aids.
- Retrievals and refiles.
- Referral.Classes & user instruction with traditional and electronic resources.
- Remote:Research for mail & e-mail inquiries.Telephone inquiries.Distribution of publications.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
- Public seminars & workshops.
- Collaborative programs.
- Publications: printed and electronic.
- Exhibits.- Technical advisory services.
- Documentation.
- Liaison to MWWC Advisory Committee
Qualifications:
- Masters degree from an ALA-accredited program in Library Science; background in English, women's studies, or relevant discipline also desirable.
- Ability to work in a team atmosphere and to interact knowledgeably, sensitively, and effectively with members of diverse groups and communities.
- Experience in grant writing.
- Budgeting experience.
- Effective communication, outreach, and public relations skills.
- Experience with digital imaging and web site development.
- Effective use of bibliographic management information systems and experience with information technologies in a networked computer environment.
- Experience in special collections management, preferably in academe, including the rare book trade, and preservation and disaster planning.
