Description:
The Brown University Library invites applications for a Project Archivist, a 2-year, grant-funded position. The Project Archivist will lead the Basic Processing project to provide online access to over 6,500 linear feet of unprocessed accessions.
The Project Archivist will conduct a collection survey of Manuscripts and University Archives. The Project Archivist will analyze and implement the Archivists' Toolkit and conduct related training, write procedures, and perform database cleanup. The Project Archivist will provide EAD training to staff as needed.
This position will minimally describe collections with assistance from Manuscript and University Archives staff, Technical Services staff, and a student assistant. This position will coordinate the upload of MARC records to the University Library's online catalog (Josiah) and submission of encoded finding aids to the Rhode Island Archival and Manuscript Collections Online (RIAMCO) database. S/he will review all data to ensure consistency in the use of standards. The archivist will formulate, disseminate, implement, administer, and revise related policies and procedures as required.
The Project Archivist will publicize the activities and goals of the project via University Library publicity outlets and press releases via professional listservs and web sites. The Project Archivist reports to the University Archivist. Grant period: September 2010 - August 2012.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in library/information science, history, or history-related field with training in special collections or archival administration.
- A minimum of 2 years experience arranging and describing archival records.
- Experience using EAD and understanding of arrangement and description of archival and manuscript collections.
- Awareness of national trends in archival description.
- Knowledge of DACS and experience creating MARC records.
- Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly in presentations.
- Ability to interact effectively with many different constituencies.
- Capacity to organize multiple projects simultaneously and work successfully in a deadline-oriented environment.
- Strong knowledge of and experience with digital archive initiatives, particularly in the development of policies and procedures.
- Working knowledge of AACR2, AAT, LCSH, and LC classification is preferred.
- Understanding of grant writing procedures and management of grant-funded projects.
