Interim Archives and Special Collections Librarian at Mount Holyoke College
Description:
Mount Holyoke, founded in 1837, is an undergraduate liberal arts college for women nestled in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. Archives and Special Collections is comprised of over 9,000 linear feet of archival and manuscript material and 11,000 rare books documenting the history of the College with strengths in missionary history, the history of women in higher education, and the sciences. Mount Holyoke is part of the Five Colleges, Incorporated, a consortium of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Mount Holyoke College seeks an experienced archivist to serve as Interim Archives and Special Collections Librarian, a 4/5 time position for a period of 5 months beginning in November, 2007. The position will provide critical support while the head of collections is on maternity leave.
Reporting to the Director of Access and Technology Services, the Interim Archives and Special Collections Librarian’s primary responsibilities will include processing, arranging and describing the partially processed papers of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein, measuring ca. 55 linear feet. The papers, spanning the years 1967 to 2005, include writings, programs and publicity materials, correspondence, recordings, journals, student papers, photographs, appointment and address books. The Writings form the bulk of the collection and consist of drafts and edited copies of more than thirty major and minor works. Additional responsibilities will include providing reference services, support for the teaching activities of the department, supervising a Simmons GSLIS Digital Collections intern and a student assistant.
Minimum Qualifications:
ALA accredited MLS with formal archival training and experience with all phases of providing access to archival collections, preferably in an academic setting. Good knowledge of and experience with Encoded Archival Description (EAD), DACS, MARC, Dublin Core and collection management databases. Understanding of and experience with digital projects; experience creating exhibitions; strong public presentation skills and the ability to provide undergraduate instruction in use of primary source materials including archival, manuscript and rare book collections; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Preference will be given to individuals with experience processing literary papers, knowledge of rare book collections, supervisory experience and experience providing reference service in an academic environment.
