Corporate Archivist at the Maine Historical Society

Description:

The Maine Historical Society seeks an experienced archivist for a temporary position to process the manuscript and archival collection of a major Maine-based business.

This is a full time, contract position to process a collection of a local firm dating from the 1920s to the present. Approximately 500 cubic feet of material has been temporarily relocated to a site in Scarborough for processing. Funding has been committed for at least one year of work, possibly two. Salary $32,000. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Position begins in January (ASAP).

The Corporate Archivist will report to the MHS Head of Library Services in collaboration with the MHS Archivist/Cataloger and our Archival Consultant.

Duties include:

* Surveying the collection to be processed
* Drafting a processing plan, in conjunction with the Maine Historical Society Library staff
* Determining and acquiring appropriate archival supplies
* Processing the collection according to standard archival guidelines
* Performing simple preservation tasks, such as removing staples, paper clips, etc.
* Consulting with MHS staff when necessary
* Implementing necessary conservation measures
* Compiling descriptions of the material
* Re-filing and re-boxing the collection in acid-free housing
* Writing a detailed finding aid including information on context and related collections as well as description of the material
* Drafting collection-level description for imputing into Minerva, the state-wide online union catalog

Job requirements:

2-5 years of processing archival collections, bachelors or masters degree in related field, ability to work independently. Preferred: Masters in Library Science or equivalent degree, experience working with large archival collections, especially corporate archives.p>
