Duties And Responsibilities:

The Schlesinger Library of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (Harvard University) has begun a five-year project to eliminate an existing backlog of materials in all formats. As part of this five-year project, the manuscript cataloger/processor, serving in a term appointment, will work independently and as a member of a team to provide intellectual access to material that is in the library's backlog, which consists of material on the history of women in the United States and culinary history. Reporting to the Senior Archivist in the Collection Services Department of the Schlesinger Library, the manuscript cataloger/processor may be asked to serve on library-wide committees, participate in special projects, or participate in Radcliffe Institute activities. Working on a variety of manuscript/archival collections, the manuscript cataloger/processor will arrange and describe collections, create finding aids in XMetal using EAD (Encoded Archival Description) schema (created by Harvard's Office for Information Systems), and update MARC records in ALEPH. Arrangement of collections will require preservation measures and may include preparation of portions of collections for microfilming.

Required Education, Experience and Skills Basic Qualifications:

MLS with a concentration in archives management and/or an MA in history or related field. Demonstrated skills in manuscript processing, two years' experience required. Knowledge of LCSH, MARC format, and word processing skills. Must be able to lift 40 pounds comfortably. Must be able to work independently and make judgments/recommendations about content appraisal and privacy issues. Additional Requirements: Strong written, verbal, and listening skills. Experience with legal case files desirable. Ability to work independently. Familiarity with XML and EAD and a degree in or knowledge of contemporary U.S. women's history preferred.

Additional Information Additional Duties Include:

Working with other manuscript department staff members in cataloging photographic and audiovisual material from the collections. NOTE: THIS IS A 5-YEAR TERM APPOINTMENT. There are three Manuscript Cataloger/Processor positions open at the Schlesinger Library. In applying to one, you will be considered for each of these positions.
