    The NEA Fall 2014 Program Committee invites you to submit a proposal for the Fall 2014 meeting in Newport, Rhode Island on November 1st.


    The NEA Fall 2014 Program Committee invites you to submit a proposal for the Fall 2014 meeting in Newport, Rhode Island. This half-day symposium will focus on innovative implementations of technology and archival theory in a variety of institutions. The goal of this meeting is to provide attendees with practical advice to strategize for and successfully implement similar projects in their own institutions.


    The Program Committee seeks proposals for sessions which will describe current and recent projects in detail, including the planning process, intended outcomes, workflows, and results. The sessions should also include strategies for successful application in other institutions.


    The Program Committee is particularly interested in the following topics, although all topics will be considered:

    • Digital preservation

    • Outreach/marketing

    • Records management

    • Crowdsourcing

    • Online exhibits

    • Backlog processing

    • Instruction


    Please submit proposals to Abigail Cramer (abigail.cramer@gmail.com) by April 4, 2014. Include your name, contact information, and a description of the project and its relevance to other institutions.

  • Your Feedback is Needed for NEA's Inclusion and Diversity Statement

    Over the past three years, the NEA Board has been working on an inclusion and diversity initiative for the organization. A Diversity Task Force was appointed in June 2011 and they submitted a final report with recommendations to the Board in June 2013. 

    As a next step in our efforts, we are working on an inclusion and diversity statement for NEA. This statement is intended to be dynamic, kinetic, and fluid. Membership input is vital to this process, therefore your feedback is important and will help to strengthen and improve this statement. 

    Three draft inclusion and diversity statements have been crafted.  Please share your comments on these statements here:

  • Day of Service Volunteer Opportunity at Spring NEA Conference

    Join fellow NEA members on Thursday, March 20th, in a volunteer outreach project to help Portsmouth Public Library preserve and describe one of their unique collections: the Henry Clay Barnabee Collection. Barnabee was a Portsmouth-born actor and singer, and the collection includes scrapbooks, correspondence, images, and assorted ephemera. Volunteers will complete basic description tasks and assist in scanning materials to enable the library to provide greater access to this whimsical collection. Some volunteers may also consult on preservation issues and digitization workflows as well, depending on experience.

    This volunteer outreach initiative follows in the tradition of the StoryCorps project, Why Worcester?, held at last year's 40th anniversary meeting. We plan to continue to engage in exciting ways with the community where we hold our meetings.


    Volunteer shifts will run from 10:00am-12:00pm, 1:30pm-3:30pm, and 3:30pm-5:00pm, and will take place in the beautiful Special Collections Room at the Portsmouth Public Library.



    The deadline to sign up is MARCH 15, 2014. Please email Megan Schwenke or Camille Torres Hoven to volunteer and for additional information.


  • REPS Event at NEA Spring 2014 Meeting

    Are you a member of NEA's Roundtable for Early Professionals and Students (REPS) or interested in joining? If so, we're pleased to invite you to our first annual roundtable meeting during the NEA Spring 2014 Meeting in Portsmouth, NH.

    Day: Friday, March 21, 2014
    Time: Noon to 12:45 p.m.
    Place: Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Ballroom (NEA conference site), Portsmouth, NH

    Please bring a lunch (restaurants are nearby!) and join us as we recap a fantastic first year of REPS activities, introduce our new officers, and look forward to an exciting Year 2.   • The Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies (JCAS) welcomes applications for peer reviewers

    The Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies (JCAS) welcomes applications for peer reviewers. The JCAS editorial board will maintain a list with the names and expertise of reviewers who will then be matched to articles as needed. 

    About JCAS

    The journal’s mission is to further awareness of issues and developments in the work of professional archivists, curators, and historians, and serve as a locus for graduate students and professionals in library science, archival science, and public history to contribute original works of research and inquiry for peer review and publication. JCAS publishes research articles, case studies, literature reviews (book, web-based, multimedia), work-in-progress articles, and conference reports that emphasize unique intellectual and technological developments in the archival profession. JCAS is an open-access, online academic journal published via the Berkeley Electronic Press Digital Commons platform.


    About the Peer Review Process


    JCAS follows a double-blind review process so that author and reviewer will remain anonymous to one another. Peer reviewers will focus on the content of the manuscriptundefinedits originality and reasoning, its structure, its tone, and the soundness of its researchundefinedwhile also taking into consideration the quality of the writing. After evaluating an article, peer reviewers will submit a report with publishing recommendations to the editorial board. Reviews must be completed in 21 days.


    If you are interested in serving as a JCAS peer reviewer, please submit a short statement (maximum 150 words) describing your qualifications and area(s) of expertise along with a resume or CV to the JCAS editorial board (email.jcas@gmail.com). Applicants will be notified via email when they are added to the list of JCAS peer reviewers. Peer reviewers will be contacted as needed and can decline particular assignments whenever a timely completion of a review is not possible.
